Master Tape Technical Guidlines

Surround sound brings a new level of complexity not normally found in stereo. Therefore, it's imperative that we have as much information about your project as possible. All of the required information is contained on the label on the next page (which we strongly suggest you use), but any potential problems can be avoided as long as the following points are indicated.

First, we recommend the following for all master media:

  • An audio slate on each channel indicating the channel assignment (i.e. "Left Front", "Right Surround").
  • At least 30 seconds of 1kHz tone or pink noise printed at -20dBFS
  • On tape media, the program start should be no earlier than 2 minutes into the tape.

Also, please indicate the following:

  • What are the channel assignments (very important!)?
  • Is the LFE channel filtered?
  • What is the reference level in SPL?
  • What is the sampling rate?
  • What is the bit resolution?
  • If time code is included, what is the format?
  • Are the surround channels calibrated equal to the front channels or -3dB?
  • What is the media format and how many pieces are there?

Other things we should know:

  • How long is the program?
  • What is the intended final audio resolution (i.e. 96/24 or 48/20)?
  • What is the final sequence?
  • Are there any edits required?
  • Will the session be attended and by whom?
  • If no one is attending, is there anything about the project we should know?
  • What parts are required?
  • Who will give final approval?
  • Who is the official paying client and who can we call for a purchase order?
